Bump in the Dark

Subject: Bump in the Dark 2nd January 2011, 12:46 pm

As everyone is pulling themselves out of the rubble, a strange quiet descends. A moment when the sounds of falling rubble, your heavy breathing, and even of your own thoughts, seem to go silent.

And in that silence, you can hear a shuffling, as if dozens of feet were scraping their way toward you.

You are not alone in this cavern.

Mambele grits his teeth, not sure yet whether he'd prefer to face dozens of foes, or one foe with dozens of feet.

Tiagarth pulls himself together and makes sure that he has everything. He wipes the blood off of his split lip. The sound of the foot falls catch his attention and he takes a minute to study the sound.

Mambele wipes the dust off his lips with his sleeve and rubs the grit off his eyes as he reunites with the group. "Please let it be gnomes. Or faires. I'll settle for rats, if they're friendly and wear cute tiny hats."

Fang grins and brandishes his scythe. " Frankly, Mambele, I hope it's NOT fairies or gnomes..."

Menzo also readies his weapon. Already feeling the worse for wear, he doesn't want to take chances with odd sounds.

"Who goes there? Show yourself!" He calls out.

The multitude of shuffling stops. There is a moment of silence, as if the very darkness itself was bating it's breath.

A voice rings out from the shadows. Deep and strong but tinged with the ethereal.

"Who is... you being?" It asks, stumbling over the words.

Mambele makes a face. "With a voice like that... I'm starting to hope it's not a fairy as well."

Reaching for his pack, the warlock gets out a torch and tries to set it alight with his prestidigitation gloves.

Mambele's success with the torch is readily apparent. As the flame first flares into life, everyone can see that you are surrounded. Each of the emaciated forms has a different face. Some are beautiful, others are terrifying, but you only catch a glimpse before the torch dies down to it's normal level. One figure stands closer then the rest and within the circle of light. His skin is ashen gray and seems dry and brittle. His face, no, not his face but a mask, is intricately carved and decorated. A dim glow is seen within the eye sockets. All he wears is a loose wrap of faded cloth around his waist. His limbs are spindly and he shakes as he stands before you.

His voice is still strong.

"Who is you being?" He says a little more confidently.

"Who is...", Fang said with a puzzled look, more astonished at the stranger's bad grammar than of his form. Fang looked to the other's for a moment, then to Menzo.

Realization then strikes Fang, leaning over to whisper to Menzo. "It's clear that Common isn't their native language. I'm sure you've guessed they're asking who we are."

Stepping forward, Mambele cannot resist intervening. "We are merely travellers. We entered your home by accident when the quake threw us in, and we'll happily leave you be as soon as we can find an exit." he says, trying to sound friendly, but intentionally looking as tall and proud as he ever did, hoping to have himself and his friends look anything but helpless.

+8 diplomacy. I'd like to roll for intimidation and bluff as well, if that's okay.

Fang frowns, not able to make out any of the words, but he can surely tell the tone. He starts to lower his scythe at least, trying to look less like someone itching for a battle. (Yeah, right.)
